If you are thinking about a former employer and missing the work and culture, or if you’re an employer and wish you had a way to welcome back a previous worker, keeping the door open is the best way to ensure communication.

From an employee’s point of view, providing a formal notice and leaving in a professional manner is a great start to maintaining a relationship with your previous employer and present future opportunities. Refrain from publishing negative comments about them on other websites or any other social platform. While most think it can be confidential, it doesn’t take a lot of information for an employer to figure out who wrote them.

If you left a company because of a bad manager or a toxic environment or were downsized, keep in touch on LinkedIn and other social media platforms with former managers and coworkers you enjoyed a good relationship with. That type of proactive communication can help leave the door ajar for a potential return as they can be points of reference when positions are available. This is beneficial for both parties as it give you opportunities in your career, while the company hires someone who is aware of the process(es), culture and expectations.

If you are a manager of an organization and have an employee leaving, you should find someone within the company and neutral to both parties conduct the exit interview and document it. This prevents any biases and uncomfortable situations from arising, as the reason the employee might be leaving is the relationship between themselves and the manager.

Valued team members leaving should also know that they’re welcome and there are no hard feelings should they decide to return. Ask them to stay in touch and follow the company on social media, opening doors for communication during the separation period. If you don’t keep in touch with former employees, they may never consider coming back. Both parties must make an effort, and both are capable of making the first step, but it can be beneficial for the company to make the first move as it is a positive reason for the employee to consider when an opportunity to return presents itself.

If you’re reminiscing about your former employer and missing the experience you had, reach out and see if there is a way for them to welcome you back. And if you’re an employer, do you have a way to welcome back your alumni if they are open to rejoining your organization? The relationships built between coworkers as well as the company and employee can be a return on investment. Staff Solve continues to provide high-quality candidates and jobs in diverse markets for over 27 years.
