How to Deal with Position Rejection

  • On April 29, 2021

Rejection is a topic of job searching we all try to avoid because it never feels good. We let the feeling fester inside and can lead to discouragement when applying for other positions. Instead of letting it deter you, here are some tips for dealing with rejection.

You Win Some, You Lose Some

The process of job applications is similar to playing a game: you win some, you lose some. Everyone has lost at some point in their life, both personal and professional. Sometimes the process can be long, but you have to continue to play to achieve your career goals and land the positions you want.

Feedback

After receiving your rejection letter, take the chance to ask (if possible) for some constructive criticism. Use the information to improve on, making your work better if you’re open to it. Just like a project, it can take a lot of time, and sometimes quite a few revisions.

Consider Point of Views

If you are open to feedback, you should keep in mind the point of view of your source. During school, classmates and professors would have recommendations to make a paper better, but the points would vary. Sometimes their points are helpful, but keep in mind what you feel to be right too.

Embrace Rejection

While being told “no” is not the best feeling, it shows you are willing to showcase your work and your abilities for the job. Many well-known individuals were rejected for their work and abilities, but eventually found their way and persevered. Eventually, a job offer will be extended to you, and you got there by surviving through the rejection.
